Arfa Karim is a name that needs no introduction. Arfa Karim Randhawa (February 2, 1995 – January 14, 2012) was born to Abdul Karim Randhawa in Chak No. 4 JB, Ram Diwali, and Faisalabad District. Arfa Karim Randhawa, who met his father at the invitation of Microsoft founder Bill Gates in July 2005, is still remembered today for his immense honors and fame at an early age and for his death in childhood.
Arfa Karim Randhawa represented Pakistan at various international forums and was invited by the Pakistan Information Technology Professionals Forum for a two-week stay in Dubai, where a dinner was hosted in his honor. Hundreds of dignitaries from Dubai, including the Pakistani ambassador, attended the dinner. Arfa Karim was presented with various awards and gifts, including laptops. In November 2006, Randhawa attended the Tech-Aid Developers Conference after receiving an invitation from Microsoft, the theme of which was Gate Agide of the Game. She was the only Pakistani among the more than 5,000 developers at the conference. International media described Arfa Karim Randhawa as the other side and bright face of Pakistan’s image. Arfa Karim retained the award until 2008. After returning to Pakistan from a visit to Microsoft headquarters, Randhawa gave interviews to various television and newspapers. On August 2, 2005, on the occasion of Fatima Jinnah’s 113th birthday, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz presented the Fatima Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology to Arfa. He also received the Salam Pakistan Youth Award from the President of Pakistan in August 2005.
Arfa Karim Randhawa was also awarded Pakistan’s highest literary honor, the Presidential Pride of Performance, by General Pervez Musharraf in 2005. A civil award is also given which is usually given to those who have excelled in their respective fields in the long run. She was the youngest recipient of the award. Arfa Karim Randhawa was made the brand ambassador of Pakistan Telecommunication Company’s 3G wireless broadband service "EVO” in January 2010.
In 2011, Arfa Karim was studying in the second year of A level in Lahore Grammar School. On December 22, 2011, Kareef Karim suffered a heart attack after an epileptic seizure which damaged his brain and he was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Lahore in critical condition. On January 9, 2012, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates contacted Randhawa’s parents and instructed his doctors to do everything possible.
Young IT expert Arfa Karim passed away on the night of January 14, 2012 in a coma. He was only 16 years old at that time. On January 15, 2012, Arfa Karim was buried in his native village Chak No. 4, Ram Diwali.
Paying homage to Arfa Karim, the Science Park has been named as "Arfa Karim Software Technology Park”. Arfa Karim Software Technology Park is the largest Information and Communication Technology Park in the country located in Lahore. The project started with the name "Lahore Technology Park”.
Today, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Arfa Karim Randhawa, celebrations were held in his memory all over the country and abroad and the services of Arfa Karim were appreciated and paid tribute through social media, TV channels and other media including radio. We know that paying tribute to the young Arfa Karim after his death will not pay homage to his services. Nevertheless, we will continue to thank him every year for raising the profile of the country.
